The increasing prevalence of online slot gambling addiction among adolescents has become a pressing social problem with detrimental effects on psychological, social, economic, and religious aspects, particularly in rural areas with limited digital literacy and weak parental supervision. This study aims to analyze the role of parents in addressing online gambling addiction among adolescents in Kuala Toho Hamlet, Toho Ilir Village, Toho District, Mempawah Regency. The research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological case study method, collecting data through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving adolescents engaged in online gambling and their parents.
The findings reveal that limited parental digital literacy, peer influence, and the lack of positive community activities are major factors contributing to gambling addiction among adolescents. Parents with low technological understanding tended to be passive, while those with greater awareness were more effective in applying preventive and corrective measures. The addiction led to behavioral changes, declining academic performance, psychological stress, and financial losses that triggered family conflicts. This study concludes that active parental involvement is crucial in preventing and mitigating online gambling addiction, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration among families, communities, schools, and government to strengthen youth character in the digital era.
