The phenomenology of interfaith marriages often occurs even though it is prohibited as stated in Article 2 paragraph (1) of Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage, which states that marriage is valid if it is carried out according to the laws of each religion and belief. Thus, there are no known interfaith marriages, whether Islamic or other religions recognized by the Government.
The aim of the research is to determine the causes of the phenomenon of interfaith marriage and its implications for household harmony and happiness, through an empirical qualitative approach, namely a research method that uses word data to collect and analyze the meaning, opinions or reasons underlying the subject. Empirical is defined in philosophical terms to explain epistemological theories which consider experience as a source of knowledge. Then empirical research is a method that uses empirical evidence as information obtained through observation or experimentation.
The results of the research obtained knowledge regarding the phenomenology of interfaith marriage and its implications for household harmony and happiness, such as legal, psychological and juridical implications. The conclusion is that interfaith marriage is strictly prohibited in Indonesia for all religions recognized by the Government. As a consequence, the Government needs to immediately establish explicit regulations regarding the issue of interfaith marriages.
